A traditional green-roof with retention effects turns into a detention-roof:

Conventional green roofs absorb rainwater and consequently reduce runoff volumes over the course of a year. However, this only works effectively if the green-roof is largely dry. As soon as it is wet, it works like a soaked sponge, i.e., it cannot absorb any more water. For a soaked green roof, the rate of runoff is the same as the rate of rainfall.

Traditional green-roofs reduce the rain volume which arrives on the streets by 50% through the process of evapotranspiration. This 50% is said to be “retained” and never becomes runoff. However, the remaining 50% that does become runoff is the very reason why traditional green-roofs are not sustainable stormwater management tools. This is especially the case during heavy rainfalls or multi-day rainfalls. It can be compared to a parachute which opens only every second time. A traditional green-roof is excellent, but not sufficient on its own for flood protection and to prevent expensive damages and loss of lives.
